Because it’s Friday, the MOTD is a lighter hearted than usual. The graphic does not need much, if any explanation. Have a great weekend!

Map O’ The Day #82 - The Influences That Shaped Petra

Category: Education — Tags: , , – Grant Smith @ 3:14 pm

Today’s MOTD comes to us from budding graphic artist Bashar Alaeddin, who designed it for an Interactive Design class at Vancouver Film School. He uses three rings of information to tell the story about the ancient archeological site, Petra, located in present day Jordan and recently designated as a wonder of the world.

The outermost ring shows the goods and materials and ideas that may have been traded by in and around the site. The middle ring shows the cultures that ‘controlled’ Petra and the customs that were passed to others, as well as some interesting facts. The innermost ring is a timeline that is consistent with the rest of the graphic.

I thought it was interesting that Bashar decided to use a counterclockwise timeline rotation to tell his story, although, i concede, it makes sense either way.

Map O’ The Day #81 - Slap Shots

ice_hockey

Today’s map of the day is another in our ‘Get To Know A’ sport series focused on the game of hockey. It was created by Peter Santilli and Chris Kaeser to explain the differences in the rules between olympic hockey and NHL hockey but also does a great job teaching the basics of the game of hockey. If you were wondering, the men’s gold went to Sweeden and the women’s gold medal went to Canada.

I wanted to publish this graphic for the up coming NHL Stanley Cup Series. If you are not a fan of the sport, or are a fan and don’t fully understand some of the rules, use this as a handy reference guide.

The bottom map is a ‘callout’ map that details the change made to NHL equipment during the 2008 offseason. Both graphics are stylistically similar and work well together to provide a more complete representation of the current uniform specifics.

Go Pens!

Today’s map comes to us from Chile via, Jorge Luis Cortes. His Visual Editor social network page can be found here.

Despite being in a foreign language to most of our readers, Jorge’s map is simple to understand because of his use of space from left to right and the iconology representing the various tracks around the world. Names and measurements are also universal and one can gain alot of information about the 2008 standings, ages of participants, track winners and teams, etc…

This MOTD has been blasted out there and is a very nice infographic about backyard grilling. I wondered on the timing of the release of the graphic because Memorial Day was coming, which is why I chose to post it today. If you haven’t seen it yet, take a look. There are some fun facts to bring up while your grilling today.

Have a safe and happy Memorial day!

Map O’ The Day #78 - Exploding Drink Prank

Category: Food & Beverage — Tags: , , – Grant Smith @ 3:05 pm

st_howto_fjpg1

Because it’s a beautiful Holiday weekend and some readers may be in an atmosphere that supports playing jokes on family, friends and loved ones, I posted this graphic about how to make an exploding drink from one of my favorite periodicals, Wired Magazine.

It is a silly prank that is easily describable in 4 pictures. Inspired by the Mythbusters Mentos* and soda myth, this joke is great because it can be played on young and old, alcohol drinkers and non alcohol drinkers. Try to time it right so the person you are playing a joke on is standing on an easily cleanable surface. It wouldn’t be prudent to go into the den and have a conversation on your great grandmothers antique rug!

*Mentos must be peppermint flavor!

Today’s MOTD is a personal favorite from the World Research Institute. It shows three vertical lanes of information creating one continuous and easy to understand flow chart.

Map O’ The Day #76 - Russian Athlete ‘Fees’

Today’s MOTD is all about simplicity and elegance. Ignore the fact that it’s published in Russian, (?), and focus on the fact that the graphic, as a standalone image, is able to convey at least two stories to the viewer. It focuses specifically on the amount of money prominent athletes in each sport earn, as well as an provides interesting insight regarding the value placed on each sport within Russia.

Personally, I would have thought hockey would have been above basketball and soccer, but that seems to not be the case.

Last point; check out the fact that the entire structure of the graphic is laid out like a dollar sign, providing an almost subliminal tone to the presentation.
