Today at Maga we hosted guest speaker Dr. Vincent Covello.Dr. Covello is the founder and Director of the Center for Risk Communication in New York City. He has authored 25 books and written 75 essays on the science behind high risk, high stress communication. Dr. Covello specializes in effective communication in times of high concern, focusing on the science and data behind human reactions and brain functions during intense situations such as bombings, pandemics and natural disasters.
We spent the afternoon listening to Dr. Covello’s professional experiences and communicating our own thoughts and opinions regarding real world examples. Dr. Covello offered fascinating insight in to the amount of information a person can absorb after a traumatic event as well as what types of messages are most likely to be received. It was an inspiring afternoon filled with discussion about communication and templates that Dr. Covello uses with his clients, which includes the London and Beijing Olympics and New York’s former Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
So why is Risk Communication so important? We found a quote to summarize why we feel it is vital to today’s world, especially after the fantastic lecture today.
“It take 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that you will probably do things differently.” –Warren Buffett
Communication is important to every person in every field around the globe. To be better communicators we must look at communication from every angle and try to understand the human behind it.
