Transforming Data into a Map

Below is a brilliant example of the power of big data when paired with visual design.  Today’s image comes from Giorgia Lupi and her design studio, Accurat, which is based out of Milan, Italy.  The design embodies the movement of the Nobel Prize winners over the past century, tracking the laureates’ birth cities, levels of education, and gender.

What a beautiful image to portray the changing of generations and how time periods impact the Nobel Prize.

The laureates’ hometown as well as their age and gender fluctuate with the years, yet having a PhD and the education of an Ivy League school remain the same.  What changes do you anticipate this chart will have to reflect in the next century of awards?
