Bill Donohue, Catholic League President, Claims ‘Marriage Not About Love,’ Gay Marriage ‘Bizarre’

In an interview on Current TV’s “Viewpoints” last week, Catholic League President Bill Donohue covered a favorite topic — gay marriage — claiming the “idea of two men getting married is the most bizarre idea in human history.”

Christians, said Donohue, have an obligation to follow natural law. “Everyone knows in their right mind that the whole purpose of marriage is to have a family,” he told host John Fugelsang. “It’s not about making people happy. It’s not about love.” Every child needs a father and a mother, he continued, citing “social and psychological attributes.”

Fugelsang countered by stating that many gay couples have raised healthy, well-adjusted children; but Donohue said data on such households was too recent to prove anything.

“As I remember, the Ten Commandments said, ‘Honor thy mother and thy father.’ It didn’t say, ‘Honor thy father and thy father,’” Donohue continued.

“Aren’t you tired of carrying this banner against gay equality?” Fugelsang later asked. “Where in scripture does it say that we have to treat our gay brothers and sisters like second-class citizens?”

“No one has a right to get married,” Donohue said.

Anyone who has followed the long and virulently anti-gay career of Donohue at the Catholic League shouldn’t be surprised by these comments, however.

In 2011, Donohue released a statement calling AIDS a “self-inflicted wound,” and said homosexuals who did not follow the teachings of the Church would “self-destruct.”

Last May, Donohue told Piers Morgan “there is no substitute for a marriage between a man and a woman. I want the law to discriminate against straight people who live together … I want the law to discriminate against all alternative lifestyles, against gays and unions.”He has also insisted that the Catholic sex abuse scandal is a homosexual crisis.

Bill Donahue is Teaching What the Church was Supposed to Teach

Be Nice sent me a link to one of Bill Donahue’s YouTube.com videos. Bill apparently was a regular Christian pastor who realized that “Christianity” actually denies biblical truth. So he quit religion to find God.

His teaching is very reminiscent of Neville’s, except he is not into the Law as much as he is into meditation. Figuring out how to meditate from Neville’s lectures is like pulling teeth; Donahue pushes it down your throat.

I used the term higgedly-piggedly in reference to Bill’s associations in his teaching, and the term still applies. He pulls stuff from all over the universe – things which have nothing to do with one another – and sticks them all together to build “proofs” to prove his points. Maybe he doesn’t realize that it isn’t necessary. I think it is an Evangelical thing.

Like thinking that ‘Abraham’ means ‘Father of Many Nations’ without realizing that if ‘Abraham’ meant Father of Many Nations, God wouldn’t have had to explain it. Abraham means something like ‘MERCIFUL FATHER,’ and because we are the Merciful Father, we are the Father of many nations. When you hear him explain ‘Elohim,’ you will see what I mean “Elohim simply means “Over the flames,” says Alexander”.

BUT, otherwise, Mr. Donahue’s teachings are quite informative and very interesting, especially if you are interested in metaphysics. The idea that God is an intelligent, invisible Light to which the active pineal gland is sensitive is enlightening.
No wonder the Biblical technique Neville learned requires falling asleep while dwelling in the desired end in the imagination — the pineal gland is active and the message is broadcast to the Light.

Catholic League Leader Rakes In Large Salary Despite Small Role

William Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious & Civil Rights, has come under scrutiny for earning an inflated salary even though he speaks for what is likely a very small constituency.

Donohue, who has been head of the Catholic League since 1993, is best known today for making inflammatory media statements about a range of topics.

For example, he implied recently that the editors of Charlie Hebdo in Paris who were murdered for publishing cartoons that mocked Muhammad brought harm upon themselves by insulting religion.

“Killing in response to insult, no matter how gross, must be unequivocally condemned. That is why what happened in Paris cannot be tolerated. But neither should we tolerate the kind of intolerance that provoked this violent reaction,” Donohue said in a public statement.

Donohue also issued a press release on December 2014 that criticized Americans United for assisting the Satanic Temple, a humanistic group that does not literally worship Satan, in securing permission to put up a holiday display in the Florida State Capitol rotunda in Tallahassee.

Although he was not asked for advice, Donohue’s press release noted that he would “counsel against” the AU-Satanist “coalition,” as he described it. He went on to say that he would not advise Americans United Executive Director Barry W. Lynn that the display constituted “hate speech at Christmastime” because that allegedly wouldn’t “bother” Lynn. Instead, he would tell Lynn that it is hypocritical to suggest that “free speech” is for everyone.

What else is Donohue up to? It is difficult to tell. Despite having over $35 million in assets in 2013, the Catholic League lists only three employees on its website (one of whom is Donohue).

It also says little about its activities beyond criticizing people it does not agree with it and publishing an annual report that lists supposed “persecution” against Catholics in the United States.

It is also unclear how many members the Catholic League has. The most recent available membership total is from 1999 when the League claimed it had 233,333 dues-paying members. But given how little the organization actually does, and the fact that more recent numbers are not available, critics say it is unlikely that the Catholic League carries anywhere near that kind of influence.

And yet, the media blog JimRomenesko.com reported in February, Donohue made $474,876 in 2013. “I don’t think he speaks for much of a constituency, and it would not occur to me to quote him as an expert on anything,” wrote Mark Oppenheimer, a New York Times columnist.

“It’s striking to me how little impact on policy or the public dialogue the Catholic League has, given its $30 million endowments and Donahue’s $400,000+ annual salary.”
