Jeffrey Hawkins (/hknz/; born June 1, 1957) is the creator of Palm Computing and Handspring. He developed the Palm Pilot (where he invented the Treo). Since then, he has devoted his entire attention to neuroscience, founding the Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience (previously the Redwood Neuroscience Institute) in 2002, Numenta in 2005, and the book On Intelligence, which describes his memory-prediction framework hypothesis of the brain. He was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 2003 for “creating the hand-held computing paradigm and the first commercially viable example of a hand-held computing system.” Hawkins is also a member of the Secular Coalition for America’s Advisory Board, where he advises the group on the acceptance and integration of nontheism in American society.
