He started his car racing career at 8 after winning the Briggs Junior Karting Championship. Menard later won the medium class paving his way up to higher levels of car racing. He began ice racing at 15 years and won International Ice Racing associations.
In 2000, he was introduced to the NASCAR challenge, where he finished with 13 points. In his rookie season in 2001, Menard earned a remarkable victory at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, finishing with points.
