Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley Star in Powerful Trailer for Sarah Polley’s ‘Women Talking’

“Why does love, the absence of love, the quit of love, the need for love result in so much violence?” ponders Rooney Mara’s man or woman within the trailer for Sarah Polley’s new movie Women Talking.

The haunting first trailer for the drama, exceptional to PEOPLE, functions Mara along her co-stars, together with Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Frances McDormand, Ben Whishaw and Judith Ivey.

Adapted from Miriam Toews’ book, Women Talking facilities round a group of women from a far flung religious community who come collectively to determine what to do as they grapple with the aftermath of sexual assault perpetrated via the colony’s guys.

“We were preyed upon like animals. Maybe we should respond like animals,” says actress Sheila McCarthy, playing one of the ladies from the network.

“In Women Talking, a group of women, lots of whom disagree on crucial things, have a communication to parent out how they could pass forward collectively to construct a higher international for themselves and their kids,” Polley describes of her movie.

“Though the backstory behind the activities in Women Talking is violent, the film isn’t. We by no means see the violence that the ladies have skilled.

We see simplest quick glimpses of the aftermath. Instead, we watch a community of girls come together as they ought to decide, in a very brief area of time, what their collective reaction may be.”

Polley says that when reading Towes’ ebook, “it sunk deep into me, elevating questions and thoughts about the sector I live in that I had never articulated.

Questions about forgiveness, religion, structures of energy, trauma, restoration, culpability, network, and self-determination. It also left me bewilderingly hopeful.”

The United Artists movie marks Polley’s first film seeing that her autobiographical documentary Stories We Tell (2012).

The Canadian actress formerly directed the acclaimed films Take This Waltz (2011) and Away from Her (2006).

Frances McDormand, Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley & Ben Whishaw to star in Sarah Polley’s #WomenTalking.

It follows a group of women in an isolated religious colony as they struggle to reconcile their faith with a series of sexual assaults committed by the colony’s men.

Women Talking opens in pick theaters starting Dec. 2 and expands on Dec. 25.
