According to authorities, an employee at a Walmart that shares a plaza with Lowe’s had told the officer moments before that he had seen Richards make off with a toolbox without paying.

Richard was then pursued by the employee and the police officer, Ryan Remington, through the parking lot on his way to Lowe’s. Richard had a knife in his hand, which he tried to attack the employee.

According to the body-camera footage of the encounter, Remington said not to go into the shop. Instead, he rushed towards Richard’s side, near Lowe’s entrance. Stephanie Taylor was also there at the scene with a revolver drawn.
